Statement from Cardinal Edwin F. O’Brien, Archbishop Emeritus of Baltimore, 2007-2012

A gentle soul has returned to his Maker, committed to the end to a resolute following of Christ. William Cardinal Keeler has earned his reward. As Archbishop of Baltimore, his accomplishments have been monumental… literally in his initiative in the historic restoration of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, his pastoral realignments of the Archdiocese, mediating social differences, promoting clerical accountability and outreach to the poor, have left lasting marks on the Archdiocese. In his time as President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops he strongly spoke up for the defense of human life while building ecumenical and interfaith bridges that last to this day. His final years of illness were lived in silent, Christ-like dignity and acceptance to the will of God. May he enjoy a joyful, eternal rest in the Lord he served so generously.
